Off-the-Grid Frequently Asked Questions

The Hamakua House is off-the-grid.  Being off-the-grid means that we get all of our electricity from the sun and all of our water is collected from the rain.  We are not connected to the island's grid power system.  Our solar panels charge a large bank of deep cycle batteries all day in order for us to have power around the clock.

We strongly advise all guests to read the frequently asked questions below before placing a booking.

QuestionAnswer
Will my electronics work when visiting? Yes the power at the outlet is the same as in any American home. You will be able to charge your phone, laptop, or tablet.
Will the power run out? No, under normal circumstances the power easily lasts all night. However, if you are a major power hog, it is possible that we could run out. In that case we wouldn't have power again until the sun comes up.
Is the water safe? Yes, we treat our rain water so it is sanitary to shower and wash dishes with. We have a water cooler with 5 gallon jugs of water for drinking and cooking with.
Will I have to do anything differently? Yes, our power and water is not unlimited. We will ask that you take shorter showers and unplug all electronics when you are not using them. Electronics and chargers continue to use power if they are left plugged in. As a precaution, we ask that you only run heavy power consuming items like hair dryers or toasters during the day (when the sun is out).
Do you have a microwave? No, unfortunately microwaves are extremely power intensive. We reheat food on our propane stove and you are welcome to do the same.
Is the house heated? No, heating is not necessary as the coldest it gets on the Hamakua coast at night is in the upper 60's (what most would consider room temperature). If for any reason you are cold, please let us know and we will provide extra blankets.
Will the water run out? No, we have a 10,000 gallon tank (bigger than an above ground swimming pool) and we monitor the water levels regularly. During the dry season (June through August) we will ask that you take shorter showers to prevent us from having water issues.
Do you have a refrigerator? Yes, our fridge and freezer runs on propane and you are welcome to store food in there.
Does the house have air conditioning? No, air conditioning is not necessary as the temperature along the Hamakua Coast is consistently in the lower 70's at bedtime. The temperature is so perfect here that we have windows that we almost never close. Also, the tradewinds consistently blow providing a gentle breeze throughout the day and night.
Do I need a special inverter? No, if you are coming from the United States. If you are coming from elsewhere, any inverter that is rated for use in the United States will work.
